Westerly Shooting: At Least 1 Hurt, Shooter At Large, Reports Say


WESTERLY, RI — At least a person was shot in the affluent Rhode Island community of Westerly Thursday morning and the shooter was at large, according to multiple reports. The victim was transported to Westerly Hospital; nearby schools and hospitals were locked down. The shooting happened on Cross Street.

According to William Hanrahan, a spokesperson for the hospital, the emergency room is "on a heightened state of security," meaning that it is still open for patient care but no visitors are being allowed inside the building.


One person was confirmed to be receiving treatment at the hospital. Matthew Gregoire, a freelance news photographer, reported that it was an "MCI," or multi-casualty incident. According to Gregoire, several police departments were called in to assist and the entire Cross Street area was closed off.

WPRI reported that Rhode Island State Police confirmed at least three people were injured in the shooting. our team has reached out to state police and is awaiting comment.

Rhode Island Breaking News Source reported that there were at least three victims and that the shooter has not been caught by police.

Another Twitter user, Mike Octeau, reported that there were two injured people and one fatality.


When asked, Westerly police did not release any details about the incident.

A number of celebrities own homes in Westerly, including Taylor Swift. This summer, a man was arrested after police said he broke into Swift's home. And in April, police said a 19-year-old leading police officer on a car chase crashed into the front gate of Swift's property.
